Wayne State University has the distinction of being one of the 30 largest universities in the United States, and the epicenter of Metro-Detroit’s cultural community. At any one time the University is home to tens of thousands of students (both graduate and undergraduate), faculty, and staff.
Furthermore, Detroit, and Midtown in particular, encompasses many cultural activities such as the Detroit Science Center, Detroit Public Library, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Surrounding these magnets of culture and learning are hundreds of restaurants, various other eateries, and retail hot spots.
In addition to the University’s population, Midtown Detroit is home to the Detroit Medical Center, and its 12,000 employees. The new owners of the DMC, Vanguard Health Systems, have announced plans to invest $850 million towards the expansion and renovation of one of the country’s strongest medical centers.
Linking all this development together are two major transportation initiatives. First is the Midtown Shuttle Program, which is a shuttle service that was developed by Wayne State University, the Detroit Medical Center, and Henry Ford Hospital. Students, staff, patients and their families will now be able to easily transverse across Midtown from location-to-location without the hassle of dealing with downtown motor traffic.
The second initiative is the construction of a light rail system. This planned 3.4 mile stretch of light rail service would include many of Detroit’s best-known entertainment districts, including Comerica Park, home to Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers and Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions rule the gridiron on Fall and Winter Sunday’s. The route will wind past the Fox Theatre district and will extend into Detroit’s New Center area, the center of gravity for many local hospitals and medical facilities, as well as many of Wayne State University’s campus.
So come and be part of the excitement of Detroit and visit Wayne State University to get up close and personal with all the exciting events happening on campus and around Midtown Detroit.
